Women Chemists Committee
Talking Points, Spring 2008
Awards:
For the spring 2008 meeting in New Orleans, the WCC is focusing on its goal of recognizing women for their contributions to the chemical sciences. The WCC has a day of activities planned for Sunday, April 6th, titled STêRS – Science & Technology Awards and RecognitionS for Professionals in the Chemical Sciences. The intent of this symposium and exhibition is to mobilize ACS membership, constituents and supporters to participate in the ACS Awards Program and related recognition processes for professionals in the chemical sciences. There will be two speaker sessions, one focusing on the award process and another focusing on the impact awards can have on career opportunities, access to top talent and overall attraction to the chemical sciences. An exhibition featuring award and grant programs from various professional, government, industrial, and academic organizations will be a bridge event between the two speaker sessions. These events will be held in the New Orleans Marriott on Canal Street.
Additionally, the Eli Lilly and Company/WCC travel award program continues in its 20th year of funding women to make their first research presentation at a national-level meeting. For spring 2008 meetings, 23 women were selected and those attending this meeting in New Orleans will be recognized at the WCC luncheon on April 8th. A historical overview of the Eli Lilly/WCC Travel Award program and its impact on awardees will be presented as part of the WCC STARS symposium.
WCC Outreach:
